Speaker Rental in Boulder_ What to Rent for Your Event

You’ve got an event in Boulder and you need speakers. Maybe it’s a backyard birthday party, a community gathering at a local park, a CU house party, or a small corporate function. You don’t need a full-time sound engineer, you just need good equipment that’s easy to set up and powerful enough to fill your space.

This guide walks you through what to rent based on your event, how to choose the right system size, and what to watch out for so you don’t end up with speakers that are too quiet, too complicated, or wrong for your venue.

What to Rent Based on Your Event

Backyard Parties and Small Gatherings (30–75 guests)

You need a basic PA system: two powered speakers on stands and a simple mixer with Bluetooth or aux input. This setup handles background music and basic speech amplification for toasts or announcements. Add a wireless microphone if anyone will be speaking.

Estimated rental cost in Boulder: $150–$200 per day.

What to look for: powered speakers (meaning the amplifier is built in; you just plug them into power and connect your audio source), at least 500 watts total output, and Bluetooth capability on the mixer so you can stream directly from your phone without cable hassles.

House Parties and Medium Events (75–150 guests)

You need more power and low-end presence. Two larger main speakers plus a subwoofer give you the volume headroom and bass response to actually feel like a party rather than background noise. A mixer with multiple inputs lets you connect both a music source and microphones simultaneously.

Estimated rental cost in Boulder: $300–$400 per day.

What to look for: speakers rated for at least 1,000 watts total, a powered subwoofer (critical for dance music, hip-hop, and any genre where bass matters), and at least two wireless microphones.

Large Events and Outdoor Gatherings (150+ guests)

At this scale, you’re dealing with large spaces, outdoor acoustics, and the complexity of covering a big audience area evenly. You need multiple speaker positions, dedicated subwoofers, a multi-channel mixer, and potentially stage monitors if there are live performers.

Estimated rental cost in Boulder: $500–$750 per day.

At this level, strongly consider hiring a sound engineer rather than renting equipment alone. The equipment is capable  but getting 150+ person coverage right in an outdoor Colorado venue requires expertise in speaker placement, signal management, and live adjustment that’s hard to DIY.

How to Choose the Right System

Three factors determine what you need: guest count (more people means more power), venue type (indoor is easier than outdoor; hard surfaces create echo; outdoor loses sound in every direction), and audio purpose (background music needs less power than a DJ set or live band).

A quick sizing guide for Boulder events: indoors, plan about 10 watts per guest; outdoors, plan 15 to 20 watts per guest. So a 100-person outdoor event needs roughly 1,500 to 2,000 watts of total speaker power. This is a rough guideline: room shape, ceiling height, and wind conditions affect real-world performance.

Common Mistakes When Renting Speakers

Renting passive speakers without an amplifier. Passive speakers are just cabinets with drivers; they need a separate amplifier to produce sound. If you rent passive speakers thinking they’ll work on their own, you’ll arrive at your event with expensive paperweights. Always confirm whether the speakers are powered (self-amplified) or passive (need an amp).

Underestimating outdoor power needs. The number one mistake at Boulder outdoor events. Speakers that sound great in your living room will be inaudible at a 100-person backyard party. Outdoor events eat sound. Rent is bigger than you think you need. It’s easier to turn down a powerful system than to wish a weak one was louder.

Forgetting cables and adapters. Speakers need power cables, audio cables (XLR, quarter-inch, or RCA depending on the system), and often adapters to connect your phone or laptop. Confirm that the rental includes all necessary cables, or bring your own.

No microphone for speeches. Even at a casual party, the moment someone wants to make a toast or announcement, they’ll need a microphone. Trying to project your voice to over 75+ people and music doesn’t work. Always add at least one wireless mic to your rental.

No subwoofer. Standard speakers handle mid and high frequencies well, but they can’t reproduce the low-end bass that makes music feel alive. If your event involves dancing, DJ music, hip-hop, electronic, or any genre with bass, a subwoofer is mandatory  not optional.

Where to Rent Speakers in Boulder

Boulder has several options for audio equipment rental. When comparing providers, look at whether they offer delivery and setup (carrying speakers is heavy and awkward), what’s included in the package (cables, stands, mics, or just the speakers), whether the equipment is professional-grade or consumer-level, and whether on-site tech support is available if you need help.

M3DIUM Productions offers gear rental packages starting at $150/day with delivery, setup, and pickup included for Boulder locations. The equipment is the same professional-grade gear used on our sound engineering events, not consumer speakers from a big-box store.

When to Upgrade from Rental to Full Sound Engineering

If any of the following apply to your event, you should consider hiring a sound engineer rather than renting equipment alone: your event has live musicians or a band, you have more than 100 guests outdoors, multiple people will use microphones throughout the event, the venue has challenging acoustics (echo, wind, large open space), or audio quality is critical to the event’s success.

The cost difference between a $400 gear rental and an $800 sound engineering package is $400  and for that difference, you get a professional who handles everything, troubleshoots problems in real time, and guarantees the audio works perfectly.

FAQ

You can, but sound from a single speaker only covers one direction. For events where guests are spread around a space, two speakers on opposite sides provide much better coverage. Single-speaker rentals start at $50–$75/day.

For basic packages, no — the setup is straightforward and we walk you through it at delivery. Plug in the speakers, connect your audio source, adjust the volume. For complex setups (multiple speakers, monitors, multi-channel mixing), we strongly recommend adding tech support or upgrading to full engineering.

Renters are responsible for equipment during the rental period. Normal wear is expected; significant damage (broken speakers, water damage, theft) is billed to the renter. Damage terms are discussed before rental confirmation.

A few days is usually fine for basic packages. For peak season weekends (May–October in Boulder), reserve 1–2 weeks in advance.
