Smoke Machine, Lighting & Effects_ What You Need for Your Event

Sound gets people moving. Lighting and effects make them feel like they’re somewhere special. The difference between a dance floor with overhead fluorescent lights and one with warm uplighting, atmospheric haze, and dynamic color effects is the difference between a party in a room and an experience.

This guide covers the most common lighting and atmospheric effects for events, what each one does, when it’s worth the cost, and what to avoid.

Atmospheric Effects

Smoke Machines

Smoke machines produce thick, visible clouds of white vapor that create dramatic visual impact. The smoke is generated by heating a glycol-based fluid and dispersing it as a dense fog.

Best for: Dance floors at parties and clubs, dramatic entrances (first dance reveal, grand entrance), outdoor events where haze dissipates too quickly, and theatrical or themed events where heavy fog is part of the aesthetic.

Watch out for: Smoke machines produce thick bursts that can trigger fire alarms in indoor venues. Always check with the venue before using one. The fog is dense and low-hanging, which creates visual drama but can be overwhelming in small spaces. Outdoor use requires calm conditions; wind disperses smoke instantly.

Cost: $40–$75/day rental, or included in DJ + Sound and gear rental party packages.

Haze Machines

Haze machines produce a thin, even, barely-visible mist that hangs in the air and makes light beams visible. Where smoke creates thick clouds, haze creates atmosphere. It’s the reason concert lighting looks like defined beams cutting through the air rather than just colored spots on the walls.

Best for: Any event with dynamic lighting where you want light beams to be visible, dance floors where you want an immersive atmosphere without thick fog, weddings where you want a dreamy, ethereal quality to the lighting, and corporate events where haze adds polish without being distracting.

Watch out for: Like smoke machines, haze can trigger fire alarms. Professional event haze machines produce a much finer mist than smoke machines and are less likely to set off alarms, but always check with the venue. Haze works poorly outdoors  wind and open air dissipate it immediately.

Cost: $50–$100/day rental. Generally worth it for any event with dynamic lighting.

Lighting Effects

LED Uplighting

Uplighting places LED fixtures on the floor aimed upward at walls, columns, or drapes, washing the venue in color. It’s the single most impactful lighting upgrade for events; it transforms bland rooms into dramatic, atmospheric spaces with minimal equipment.

Best for: Wedding receptions (matched to wedding colors), corporate galas and fundraisers, any indoor venue with plain walls that need visual warmth, and themed events where color sets the mood.

Cost: $50–$100/day for a basic set (8–12 fixtures). Some DJs and sound engineers include uplighting in their packages.

Moving Head Lights

Motorized fixtures that project beams of colored light across the room, creating dynamic patterns that follow the music. They’re the lights you see sweeping across the audience at concerts and club nights.

Best for: Dance floors where high energy is the goal, parties and celebrations with a nightclub atmosphere, festivals and large events where visual impact matters, and events with a DJ where lighting can be synced to the music.

Cost: $75–$150/day per fixture. Two to four fixtures cover most dance floor areas.

String Lights and Edison Bulbs

Warm, vintage-style overhead lighting that creates an intimate, festive atmosphere. While not technically “effects” lighting, string lights are one of the most popular lighting choices for Colorado weddings and outdoor events.

Best for: Outdoor wedding receptions, barn and ranch venue events, patio and garden parties, and any event where a warm, inviting ambiance matters more than dynamic visual effects.

Cost: $100–$300 to rent and install depending on coverage area. Many venues already have string lighting installed.

When Effects Are Worth It

Always worth it: Dance floors at weddings and large parties (haze + dynamic lighting transforms the space), corporate galas and fundraisers (uplighting elevates the room), and themed events where atmosphere is part of the concept.

Sometimes worth it: Backyard parties over 75 guests (uplighting or string lights add polish), corporate presentations and conferences (subtle uplighting adds professionalism), and outdoor evening events where lighting sets the mood after sunset.

Rarely worth it: Small daytime events where lighting effects are invisible, events in venues with strong existing lighting design, and budget-constrained events where audio quality should take priority over visual effects.

How to Add Effects to Your Event

If you’re hiring a sound engineer or DJ, ask about lighting and effects add-ons. Many audio professionals offer combined packages that include sound, lighting, and atmospheric effects  which is more cost-effective than renting each element separately and more reliable than coordinating multiple vendors.

M3DIUM Productions includes a smoke machine, LED lighting, and effects in the DJ + Sound package and above. Additional lighting (uplighting, moving heads) can be added to any sound engineering or DJ package.

FAQ

It can. Always check with your venue before using a smoke or haze machine indoors. Many event venues allow haze machines but restrict or prohibit smoke machines. Outdoor events generally have no restrictions.

You can — consumer LED strips and party lights from Amazon are inexpensive. But they produce a noticeably lower quality of light compared to professional event fixtures, and the placement and programming matter as much as the fixtures themselves. For a casual house party, DIY lighting works. For a wedding or corporate event, professional fixtures make a visible difference.

Sound. Always prioritize audio quality over lighting effects. Great sound with basic lighting creates a better experience than mediocre sound with spectacular lighting. If budget is limited, invest in sound first and add lighting effects as budget allows.
